2011 IBC Highlights

Almost 1,400 registrants attended the 2011 International Bridge Conference®, (IBC) held June 5-8 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, PA. This year, the bridge program of the Republic of Korea was celebrated at the “Featured Country” Exhibit and Technical Session. The Korean display totaled 3,500 square feet in the center of the exhibit hall, and served as a cross roads for attendees as they moved about.  Beyond the Korean display, attendees could visit and learn from more than 160 exhibit booths. Located around the perimeter of the hall were 4 custom built theatres where the technical sessions were presented, allowing attendees to enjoy a majority of events and activities under one roof.

Outside of the exhibit hall complex, the Conference offered more than 20 Workshops and Seminars on such specialty topics as Coatings, NEXT Beams, Rebar Detailing, and Workzone Safety. Full descriptions on the entire Technical Program can be viewed here.

The 2011 IBC kicked off with a “standing room only” Keynote Session featuring presenters Robert Luffy (American Bridge Co., retired); Mel Kerley (AASHTO/SCOBS); Myint Lwin (FHWA); Al Engel (Amtrak); Andrew Hermann, (ASCE National President) and Hyeong-Ryeol Kim (Republic of Korea). Following the Keynote Session, attendees enjoyed 10 individual presentations on Korean bridge projects in the Featured Country session.

New this year was the Tuesday evening “IBC Awards Reception” where recipients of the 2011 Awards of Distinction were honored. A full list of the award winners can be viewed here.

Make plans now to participate in the 2012 IBC! The Conference is scheduled for June 10-13, 2012 in Pittsburgh, PA. For those who are interested in presenting to an audience of educated bridge industry professionals, the 2012 Call for Papers is already open. Also, the Exhibit Booth renewal process is underway – we will open the “new exhibits” sales in July. Plan to join us for the world’s leading technical conference on bridge design and engineering.

IBC OVERVIEW

The International Bridge Conference ® (IBC) is the pre-eminent arena for the bridge industry in North America, Europe and Asia. Sponsored by the Engineers’ Society of Western Pennsylvania, the IBC annually attracts over 1,600 bridge owners and engineers, senior policy makers, government officials, bridge designers, construction executives, and suppliers from throughout the United States and abroad. Now in it’s 29th year as an annual conference, the 2011 participants came from 46 States and 20 countries. The IBC is planned by an all-volunteer group and provides continuing education and networking opportunities to members of all facets of the bridge industry.

Events include:

Exhibit Hall - the IBC exhibit hall which is open throughout the Conference. Over 170 exhibitors representing consulting firms, software, design & construction and featuring interactive, heavy equipment displays and demonstrations.

Technical Sessions have always been the heart of the IBC, where attendees can watch, listen and learn about the numerous, various topics scheduled for presentation. Conference attendees may choose from presentations in three concurrent technical sessions, as new technical presentations are scheduled every 25 minutes. Pre-selection of presentations is not required.

Workshops, or Special Interest Sessions are focused sessions on specific topics and are presented by co-sponsors, partners and other leading industry groups. Pre-selection of presentations is not required.

Seminars - 4, 8 or 16 hour intensive courses scheduled during the Conference provide registrants with in-depth focused continuing education on a variety of topics. Separate registration is required, and a certificate of completion is awarded to each registrant.

Many Committee Meetings of industry groups are planned during the dates of the IBC to allow industry professionals to efficiently combine important committee functions with their trip to the IBC.

The Bridge Awards Reception recognizes the recipients of all IBC Awards and Medals. A full list of past winners, as well as the current recipients can be found here.

Finally, two Student Awards are presented for winning submissions from both Undergraduate and Graduate students in the field. Open submissions are accepted in both categories; please review the program at the Call for Papers section.

Pittsburgh: The City of Bridges

Located at the confluence of three sparkling rivers and banked on all sides by green hills, Pittsburgh has earned its reputation as one of America’s “most livable” cities. Long a center for the production of steel, iron, glass, Pittsburgh’s economy is now driven by technology, medicine, finance and tourism.

Nights come alive in the Cultural District, home to five theaters within walking distance of hotels and the convention center. The Cultural District also affords a selection of up-scale and mid-range dining, from French to Italian, Tex Mex to Thai.

In the Strip District, the clubs are hot, the food is spicy, and dance floors pulse to the sounds of rock, blues, jazz and salsa. Award-winning brewpubs serve up the finest lagers and ales, while classic Pittsburgh fare is featured at nearby diners. By day, the Strip is alive with street vendors and shoppers buying the freshest breads, pastries, cheeses, coffees and ethnic specialties.
