VAPOR INTRUSION - IT'S ONLY A PROBLEM WHEN YOU IGNORE IT!

Tuesday, 10:30AM-NOON

Potential vapor intrusion into future occupied buildings continues to be a major environmental concern for redevelopment of brownfield properties. In terms of risk to human health, indoor inhalation of vapor phase contaminants from the subsurface may represent the most important pathway for assessment and remediation. Petroleum compounds and solvents represent the most common contaminants at former industrial properties and must be thoroughly evaluated as to their future impacts on the site and surrounding properties. This is especially important during the site assessment and remediation phases of the project. Selection of a remedial method is site-specific and can range from removal and treatment to vapor barriers and risk management. In this session we will discuss the importance of vapor intrusion in the development of actual brownfield sites.

THE THREE 'RIGHTS': CHOOSING THE RIGHT CONSULTANT AND THE RIGHT REMEDIATION BY ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS

Tuesday, 8:30-10:00AM

Taking a brownfield property from contaminated site to a new development can be a complicated task and requires the help of a qualified environmental consultant. As in hiring any contractor, it is important to know the right questions to ask and to remain involved in the project. This session will help the municipal official develop the right questions to pick the right consultant for your brownfield redevelopment project.
