The August 2005 water main break at Gateway
Center served as a wake-up call to many property owners
and building managers. Not only do we need to be prepared
for natural disasters, but we need to recognize that problems
with aging infrastructure are inevitable.
This wide-ranging topic will cover issues
as diverse as dealing with utilities in an emergency,
to the aging city infrastructure. Difficult as it may
be to deal with flooding or hurricanes, there is generally
some advance warning. In March, we’ll share some
lessons learned from the unexpected flooding that occurred
from the August 2005 water main break, and explore how
these lessons can improve ongoing communication between
engineering services and end users.
- What lessons did we learn from the
Water Line Break on August 17, 2005?
- What is the condition of our current
water and sewer systems? How do we compare to other
cities of similar size and age.
- What are the plans to upgrade the existing
system? (What are some of the techniques and technology
that may be used?)
- What would the approach be?
- What would the impact be on the end
users, and how would it be minimized?
- What is our current capacity and ability
to handle the newly proposed hotel/casino projects at
the various locations being considered?
